The Resurrection and the Life

Read the story...

This work took some time to complete. It began in 2006 and was complete in 2009. It was not the design that caused such a delay however, but the funding that took some time. In the end through generous donations by devotees of St. Edward Parish the work was installed just in time to celebrate their 125th year. There was some party I can tell you.

I’ve added the preliminary sketches and the evolution to the finished piece in this gallery. It is a glass work and is a devil to photograph so I thought it might help the viewer, you, get an idea of what went on here. You will see a series of sketches from initial to finished design, sand carving photos of the glass masters at Art Glass with Finesse and the finished work. If you’ve read this far I’ve added my note on the piece from a letter to Reverend Joseph Graffis, the Pastor of St. Edward’s.

The Resurrection and the Life

Moving us in directions we scarcely can detect Christ is the quiet breeze transparent and transforming.

Sprouting from the smallest seed the abundant spirit comes forth. In hard line and sharp relief the glass is carved with the strength of the Lion. With subtle shading and soft gradation the hard edges contain the weakness of the Lamb.

Tongues of the creative fire become the water, the vine, the wheat, the mystery resolved and made flesh.
The Christ, ultimately sublime, reveals Himself and beckons us to new life.

”I am the resurrection and the life:
he that believeth in me, though he were dead,
yet shall he live:
And whosoever liveth and believeth in me
shall never die.”

John 11:25-26
